More Arts News from USF... 13th USF Human Rights Film Festival was held April 9-11

Big Men movie trailer
"Big Men," featured at the USF Human Rights Festival, a cautionary tale about the toll of American oil investment in West Africa.

The 13th annual USF Human Rights Film Festival selected films that addressed human rights abuses in locations as varied as the U.S., China, Guatemala, Israel, Palestine, Mexico, South Africa, the Marshall Islands, and Kashmir.

As with past festivals the goals were to promote awareness and discussion of global human rights issues and explore challenges to human rights in specific locations. Organizers believe in the power of film to educate about human rights violations and encourage citizens to take action.

USF Graduate & Former President of Peru

San Francisco Journalist & Filmmaker Jacquie Taliaferro greets Dr. Alejandro Toledo, former President of Peru, an alum of the University of San Francisco who received his doctorate from Stanford University at U.C. Berkeley last week. Toledo served as president of Peru from 2001 to 2006, and was the country's first democratically elected president of indigenous ancestry. During his term as president, the Peruvian economy grew. (Photo by Kristian George)

Dr. Toledo was in the Bay Area for his book tour promoting his second book,"The Shared Society:" A Vision for the Global Future of Latin America, President Alejandro Toledo looks at the future of a changing global world, and the role that Latin America will have by the time we reach 2050."

Having met international actor, Malick Bowens (Out of Africa,  Muhammed Ali, The Believers) during my coverage of the Cannes International Film Festival, for more than two decades, it was great to hear the news that Malick presented the Lifetime Achievement Award at March 30th ceremonies in France:

"I had the extraordinary honor to present The Lifetime Achievement Award to Marina Vlady at the 10th Annual Prix de Henri Langlois, the founder of French Cinematheque, at UNESCO in Paris."  Malick Bowens

The South East European Film Festival (SEEfest) (seefilmla.org) will celebrate its 10th anniversary beginning April 30th, with a special opening night gala at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills. This year the festival will place the spotlight on the rich cinema of Romania, and to celebrate its milestone year, will present its first ever Legacy and Lifetime Achievement Awards to Oscar-winning actor George Chakiris and legendary Romanian actor Victor Rebengiuc.
