ACADEMY WHITEOUT CAUSES OSCARS BLACKOUT
|
Jada Pinkett Smith one of the first to call for the Boycott of Oscars 2016 made her announcement on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 18,2016.

Without even a mention of an Oscar for Black actors in "Concussion," "Creed" (Sylvester Stallone is nominated while Michael B. Jordon is passed over and also overlooked, the Black film director & writer of "Creed" Ryan Coogler of "Oaktown"-no nomination for the director who also made the critically acclaimed "Fruitvale-Wow!); "Straight Outta Compton;" "Beasts of No Nation;" "Chi-Raq;" to name a few, will Hollywood continue to act like the "Soup Nazi of Seinfeld!" "No Soup," rather "No Oscar for you, today!" Will Hollywood own up to its lack of diversity? KTVU carried the story on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday.
San Francisco film industry experts gave their insights.
What others are sayin'....
Actress, Dancer, Director, Debbie Allen supports Jada Pinkett Smith and during an interview with "The Hollywood Reporter" says people should do what they feel and shared examples of unconscious bias in working on Amistad with Steven Spielberg.
Charlotte Rampling, Nominated for "45 Years," told a French Radio Station that the boycott "was racist to white people." and..."We can never know if it was really the case, but perhaps the black actors did not deserve to be in the final straight." Rampling regrets her remarks.
Don Cheadle,at Sundance talking about his direction debut for "Miles Ahead," chimes in to support Chris Rock, anchoring the February 28, 2016 Oscars. Chris Rock reportedly will adjust his monologue to address the boycott controversy. That's nothing new for Rock who opened his remarks during the UPN Network & WB merge to the CW in 2006 with "All I see is White people," garnering him nervous laughter from the internal audience gathered in LA to find out about the changes. Rock's "Everybody Hates Chris" was one of very few surviving Black shows from the previous networks that had built their brand on Black audiences.
Ben Carson, Presidential Candidate..."But at the end of the day, the American people have far more important concerns than a few Hollywood elites handing themselves awards."
As an added note... to those who say "it's only Hollywood," keep in mind that at the end of the day, Hollywood generates millions of images everyday that impact millions of decisions financially and socially, whether you get that loan or a Black child is shot dead in less than two (2) seconds by police without a thought. Dr. Jerry Kang of UCLA, explained years ago "In Trojan Horses of Race " the power of images. Images can help create bias.
"These implicit biases "have been demonstrated to have real-world consequence - in how we interpret actions, perform on exams, interact with others, and even shoot a gun."
